PRAY.GOLF — The 18 Holes of Prayer
Scripture: King James Version (public domain). pray.golf
Hole 1 · Gratitude
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
The first tee is a gift before it is a test. Before you grip the club, notice the grass, the air, and the people beside you. Gratitude loosens the shoulders and steadies the heart for whatever the round brings.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for this day, this place, and these companions. Let my first swing and my last be offered in thanks. Amen.
Hole 2 · Patience
“But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” — James 1:4
Golf rarely rewards hurry. A slow group ahead, a ball in the rough, a putt that lips out — each is a small invitation to let patience do its quiet work in us, on the course and at home.
Prayer: Father, slow my pace and soften my reactions. Grow patience in me that outlasts this round. Amen.
Hole 3 · Humility
“…and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” — Micah 6:8
Every golfer, from beginner to professional, is humbled by this game. Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less — celebrating a partner's good shot as gladly as your own.
Prayer: God, keep me teachable and kind. Let me walk humbly with You and gently with others. Amen.
Hole 4 · Integrity
“He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.” — Proverbs 10:9
Golf is one of the few games where players call penalties on themselves. Counting every stroke honestly when no one is watching is practice for a life of quiet, trustworthy character.
Prayer: Lord, make me honest in small things and large. Let my scorecard and my word be true. Amen.
Hole 5 · Forgiveness
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” — Ephesians 4:32
A bad hole carried to the next tee ruins two holes. Releasing the last shot is a small picture of forgiveness — of ourselves and of others — so we can play the next one freely.
Prayer: Merciful God, as You have forgiven me, help me release what I am holding against others and myself. Amen.
Hole 6 · Friendship
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” — Proverbs 27:17
Four hours walking side by side creates room for real conversation. The best playing partners encourage, challenge, and sharpen one another — and often become friends for life.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for friends who sharpen me. Make me a faithful friend in return. Amen.
Hole 7 · Courage
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” — Joshua 1:9
The forced carry over water asks for commitment. Courage is not the absence of fear but trusting enough to make a full, free swing — in golf and in the hard conversations of life.
Prayer: God, when I am afraid, remind me You are with me wherever I go. Give me courage to commit. Amen.
Hole 8 · Wisdom
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5
Wise course management means knowing when to lay up and when to go for it. Life asks the same discernment. Wisdom begins by asking — of God, and of people who have walked the course before us.
Prayer: Father, I ask for wisdom today. Guide my choices and help me listen well. Amen.
Hole 9 · Family
“…but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” — Joshua 24:15
The turn is a natural moment to think of home. Golf can be a bridge between generations — a grandparent teaching a grip, a parent walking with a child. Make room for those you love.
Prayer: Lord, bless my family and those I call family. Let our home be a place that honors You. Amen.
Hole 10 · Perseverance
“…let us run with patience the race that is set before us,” — Hebrews 12:1
The back nine begins whether the front went well or not. Perseverance is simply continuing — one shot, one hole, one faithful day at a time.
Prayer: God, strengthen me to keep going when I am tired or discouraged. Help me finish well. Amen.
Hole 11 · Compassion
“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;” — Colossians 3:12
Notice the golfer who is struggling, the newcomer who feels out of place, the partner carrying something heavy. Compassion slows down long enough to see people.
Prayer: Lord, clothe me with kindness. Open my eyes to those who need encouragement today. Amen.
Hole 12 · Trust
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5
On a blind tee shot you trust the line you were given. Faith often feels similar: we cannot see the landing area, but we trust the One who can.
Prayer: Father, I trust You with what I cannot see. Direct my path. Amen.
Hole 13 · Generosity
“…for God loveth a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7
Generosity on the course looks like lending a ball, sharing a read, raising money for a cause, or giving your time to teach someone new. Give cheerfully, not grudgingly.
Prayer: Lord, make me generous with my time, my resources, and my encouragement. Amen.
Hole 14 · Peace
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” — John 14:27
Tension ruins tempo. Take a breath between shots and receive a peace the scorecard cannot give or take away.
Prayer: Jesus, quiet my troubled heart. Let Your peace settle over me now. Amen.
Hole 15 · Encouragement
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:11
A simple 'great swing' can lift a whole group. Look for something true and good to say to each person you play with today.
Prayer: God, make my words life-giving. Help me build others up. Amen.
Hole 16 · Purpose
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” — Colossians 3:23
Even recreation can be worship when done wholeheartedly and with love for others. Play this hole — and live this week — as an offering, not a performance.
Prayer: Lord, let everything I do today be done heartily for You. Amen.
Hole 17 · Hope
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” — Romans 15:13
Golfers are incurable optimists — the next shot could be the best of the day. Christian hope is deeper: a confident expectation rooted in God's faithfulness, not our form.
Prayer: God of hope, fill me with joy and peace, and let hope overflow to those around me. Amen.
Hole 18 · Faithfulness
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7
Walking up the eighteenth fairway, the round is nearly complete. What matters most is not the number on the card but that we finished faithfully, with love for God and the people beside us.
Prayer: Faithful God, thank You for walking every hole with me. Help me finish my course and keep the faith. Amen.
