How to Welcome a First-Time Golfer
Practical ways to make a newcomer feel at home on the course.
Lower the stakes
Tell them in advance that nobody is keeping their score unless they want to. Suggest forward tees and allow picking up the ball after a set number of strokes to keep pace comfortable.
Explain the basics kindly
Share a few essentials — where to stand, when to be quiet, how to repair a ball mark — one at a time, in the moment, rather than as a lecture at the first tee.
Celebrate good moments
Notice a solid contact, a good putt, or simple courage. Encouragement is remembered long after the score is forgotten.
Offer equipment and logistics help
Many newcomers lack clubs or don't know dress codes. Offer to lend clubs, share what to wear, and arrange to meet them in the parking lot so they don't arrive alone.
